Air It Out -Young Mothers Who Think They Know It All

Since we all currently find ourselves in the midst of the new "Baby Boom," I feel this topic is completely relevant to today's society. Personally, I feel that when it comes to the topic of motherhood, age cannot be considered a factor. I say this with sheer confidence because I've met 19 year olds who are more mature and headstrong than some 40 year olds, and vice versa, 40 year olds who still act like typical teenagers.

However, I've been seeing a lot of young mothers who truly feel that they know it all just because they gave birth ~~~> WHERE DID THEY GET THIS FROM????? If you find yourself falling into one of the following categories, please take the time (with an open mind) to listen to what I am saying....

If YOU:
1. ... are under the age of 25 and refuse to listen to the advice of your elders because YOU know what's best for your child.
2. ... went your entire pregnancy without going to the doctor or taking pre-natal vitamins
3. ... continued to smoke, drink or party during your pregnancy
4. ... bring your child out of the house before he/she reaches 3 months old
5. ... are struggling to raise the child you have but decided to get pregnant again.
6. ... sleep until 10am (without a baby monitor) while you're child is crying in the crib (which is in the other room)

Listen Ladies, I'm not trying to pass any judgment, BUT, learn to ask for help. You cannot go about living life the same exact way that you did BEFORE you had kids! It's not possible nor is it healthy for a child. Children, especially nowadays are too smart for their own good. they listen to your every word, watch your every move and use them as a guide to develop their own skills. Let's face facts, there is no Parenting Handbook (although there are countless books to use as guides,) in essence it really is a trial of process and elimination. However, you are not the first person in the world to raise a child and for you single parents out there, you are definitely not the first one to carry the load of parenting by yourself. But learn from not only your mistakes, but the mistakes of every parent who has come before you!

Now, let me elaborate on the points I've made above.

1. As much as we hate to admit it when we are younger, most of the time, the annoying advice that our parents give us growing up, WILL BE proven true at some point in our future. Listen to your elders, especially your own parent(s)...they did raise you, didn't they?!? Either learn from their success OR let their failure motivate you not to make the same mistakes they did.

2. Please don't give me the bs that you didn't have insurance. It's called PCAP!!!! You and your baby need to be seen by a medical doctor throughout your entire pregnancy!!!! End of story!

3. Aside from common sense, if you would have gone to the doctor or at least read any type of parenting book you would know why this is an absolute no-no!

4. Now this is a touchy subject. Some people say this is okay, others beg to differ. Speak to your physician on this one. I was always told that you are NOT supposed to bring a baby outside the house until he/she reached 3 months old and received their vaccinations. Some new studies beg to differ.

5. This is just self-explanatory and in my eyes, just plain ignorant. At the end of the day, your child is your responsibility. Just because you have a supportive alliance of friends and family (or know that there is aways government assistance) does not mean it's okay for you to bring a child into the world before you, yourself are able to take care of that child!

6. Do you really need me to speak on the dangers of this?!?!? I didn't think so. Just know that anything can happen, especially while a child sleeps. How would you feel if your child choked to death in their sleep and you didn't know because a) you slept that late and b) you didn't have a baby monitor to hear them?!?!?

I could go on about this topic forever but in the end, the only person you are hurting by your lack of good parenting skills is your child!
