Our First Love

It has been said that in a person's lifetime, they will have only three opportunities to find that perfect match. Three people who may or may not come into one's life and make a difference, a change, or even an example. But what happens when the first one makes such a lasting impression, that one shuts themselves out to the rest of the world, never putting themselves into positions to meet those possible second and third hearts.

One's first love paves the way for their future outlook on relationships. That first experience can be the best thing that ever happened to a person, or it could break down one's entire perception on love and trust. I guess it depends on how strong the person was to begin with. Sharing your life with someone is, in my opinion, the wheels that makes the world turn. It is an experience that teaches us values, respect and compromise. Though, if and when that trust is broken, so is the person (s) involved. We as humans, learn to distrust everyone that brings us into that same situations, says the same things or acts in the same ways as that person who left us broken hearted.

Though, what happens when we, ourselves are at fault for breaking our own heart? Who do we distrust then? I've learned that when we become the culprit of self-heartbreak, we fall further victim of taking it out on the rest of the world. We become bitter and angry; isolated yet self-righteous. We tend to believe that we are much better off independent and single. Are we? Or is our human nature taking its natural course to avoid admitting we were at fault? A sad attempt to never be hurt again. In life everyone endures pain, but suffering is optional.

It amazes me how far (or how backwards) our own human nature could take us. How bright our smiles could shine while our hearts are ripping apart inside. We could waste years trying to replace what we once had only to realize that people could never be replaced. They are not materialistic aspects of life or even figment thoughts of our imagination. They are real.
